Provence: A Preview

Rose in Provence

Rose in Provence - Oil on Linen 8 x 10

My beautiful wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary with a trip to Paris an Provence. This was our first time in Provence and it was a revelation. The light, the history, the food, the people and beauty of this region of France exceeded what we had hoped for. In future posts I will give you details. But for now here is a little preview of a series of paintings based on the visual riches of Provence.

This rose was from the garden in the Le Mas Des Carassins Hotel in Saint Remy de Provence. Yes, the small city where Van Gogh spent nearly a year in an asylum while creating some of his most wonderful paintings. Imagine silver green olives groves, violet irises bordering the roads, and a beautiful country setting flanked by magnificently lush green mountains with rocky peaks of rich ochre.

Ah Provence !!!

On The Easel – “Morning” part 4 – fini

“Morning” is done. The photograph does not do it justice, but I hope you like it.

It has taken some time to finish this painting because I had to stop just short of finishing to take a trip oversea. To Paris and Provence. I will be writing about the visual treat that it was in future posts. I am also beginning a news series of paintings based on the trip. More landscapes, still lifes and maybe some food.

For now, au revior.

On The Easel – “Morning” aka “Untitled” part 3

I have been out of town for a couple weeks (more about that in another post).

So “Untitled” has a name now. And more color is beginning to appear. This painting all about warm against cool color and the values cast by the light. I am keeping the color thin to take advantage of the linen texture. I really don’t want the brush strokes to distract from the areas of softness.

I have slowly and carefully added more opaque color to the walls, mirror, towel and especially to the models back. Most of the color is scrubbed on in thin layers. Building the form as if sculpting it.

We are almost there now. There are some details and finishing to go. The finished painting will be in my next On The Easel post next week. Stay tuned.
