Art and Illusion: A Study in the Psychology of Pictorial Representation — E. H. Gombrich

Visual Thinking — Rudolf Arnheim
Rudolf Arnheim’s Visual Thinking argues that perception is not passive seeing but an active form of intelligence. Drawing on Gestalt psychology, Arnheim shows how the mind organizes shapes, space, balance, movement, color, and relationships into meaningful wholes. He rejects the idea that verbal or logical thought is superior to sensory experience, proposing instead that images and visual forms can express concepts, solve problems, and support abstraction.
