This is a great honor for me because of the deep respect I have for the great artist and teacher, Richard Schmid. It is wonderful to be part of such a worthy cause.

The Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department was founded back in 1975. Today they have grown into one of the best equipped, best trained volunteer fire departments in the state, responding to fires, accidents and emergencies in the 100 square mile mountain area west of Fort Collins /LaPorte, Colorado. Unlike most volunteer fire departments, they receive no mandated public funding. Everything from gas for the fire trucks and medical supplies for first responders to state-of-the-art fire fighting equipment comes from funds raised by the community.

Founded by Richard when he was living in Colorado, The Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction and Rist Canyon Mountain Festival is the only fundraiser they hold all year. Since its humble beginnings in 1996, over 1,100 pieces of fine original art have been auctioned for a total of over $1.6 million, generating over $600,000 to support this mountain fire department.
