Meyer Lemons

Annotated Video Demo

Meyer Lemons | 12×16 inches | Oil on Canvas   Meyer lemons are wonderful. They have a magic balance of tart and sweet. Perfect for making all manner of tasty treats. My favorite? Margaritas! The bounty of lemons arrives in late fall to early winter. I love that summer sunshine is packed in these beautiful fruits. These lemons were picked from a tree in our back yard and sliced in front of our kitchen window. The window faces south inviting the sunlight to flood in.

DEMO NOTES:

0:10 – Pencil drawing on primed canvas

0:17 – Blocking in the dark areas using primarily raw umber

0:18 – Blocking in the middle tones leaving the highlight areas white. The middle tones will remain a little darker than the final. This gives me room to play with the values as I refine the painting.

0:34 – Refining through blending middle tones, deepening the shadows, adding details, and laying some highlights. Note that the highlights at this stage are not pure white. I only use pure – or close to pure – white as my final strokes.

0:40 – Final refinement of details, edges, and highlights.
